The simple answer is “yes.” Stainless steel water bottles are the best when it comes to cooking and boiling water outdoors.

However, this doesn’t mean that all stainless-steel water bottles are fit for boiling water and cooking. Some steel water bottles are suitable for boiling water while others are not.

See, stainless steel water bottles are among the most multipurpose outdoor gear you will ever find in the market.

They have become very popular in recent years due to their many benefits, including durability and ease of cleaning.

But many people wonder if it’s possible to boil water in a stainless-steel water bottle.

There are also other steel bottles that are good in insulation but will not boil water at all.

Here are the two major types of stainless-steel water bottle:

Double Walled vs Single-Walled Stainless-Steel Water Bottles

Stainless steel water bottles are very versatile. They come in different designs, colors, sizes, and prices.

Before you start boiling water in a steel water bottle, you have to ensure it is of the right type, or else you are in for a disaster, frustration, or even both.

The first thing is to ensure your steel water bottle is single-walled. Not all stainless steel water bottles are single-walled. Some bottles are double-walled.

Double-walled water bottles are designed to keep your water and other drinks at the right temperature.

They are made by introducing a vacuum in between the two stainless steel walls. Vacuums are bad conductors of heat, and thus no heat will move into or out of the water bottle.

An insulated water bottle can maintain a liquid’s temperatures for up to 24 hours despite the surrounding temperatures.

If you try to use a double-walled stainless-steel water bottle you will be disappointed as it won’t even heat the water.

Single-walled bottles will allow heat from the source to move into the water you want to boil. They are the best for boiling water while camping.

Why Stainless Water Bottles Are Better Than Other Types of Bottles

Stainless steel doesn’t dissolve in the water you are boiling. The alloys making stainless steel are not reactive to oxygen or water.

This makes the bottles very safe for your health as there are minimal chances metal elements will dissolve in water.

Some other metal options like aluminum and steel are never safe because they can quickly react and dissolve in boiling water.

How to Boil Water in a Stainless-Steel Water Bottle

If you haven’t bought a water bottle yet, be sure to buy a single-walled stainless steel bottle. You should also go for a wide-mouthed bottle.

A wide-mouthed bottle does not only ensure the bubbles form and escape safely but is also easy to clean and handle.

Wide-mouthed bottles will also allow you to store smaller gear and foodstuffs in the bottle with ease when it is not in use.

To boil water with a stainless-steel water bottle, start by opening the lid and then pour the desired amount of water into the bottle.

Keep in mind that stainless steel can expand and contract depending on the temperatures in the surroundings.

Avoid putting the bottle directly into the middle of a hot flaring furnace. A very hot furnace will interfere with the threads, and the lid will fail to close the bottles properly.

To avoid these, place your bottle beside the fire and ensure the hot ashes are around the bottle.

Soon after the water starts to form big bubbles, you can push it near the fire. When the water is almost boiling, you can now put the bottle on a bigger fire for the water to boil properly.

Safety Precautions

The biggest problem with the single-walled steel bottles is that they can get very hot, and touching them can lead to severe burns. There are two ways to handle these.

The first way is by using two sticks to hold and lift the bottle from the source of heat. When using a stick, sometimes things can get out of control, so you will have to be careful not to spill the water.

The second way is by wrapping a long wire around the neck of the bottles. You can use the wire to lift the bottle, but the wire should not be exposed to fire like the bottle to ensure that it doesn’t get hot.
